Dehradun, Uttarakhand:In a remarkable initiative blending tradition with innovation, the young scientists from the School of Agricultural Sciences at Shri Guru Ram Rai University (SGRRU) have taken a significant step towards rejuvenating and renovating the historic Matawala Bagh orchard. This endeavor comes after Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, the parent body of the university, leased the orchard land to the School of Agricultural Sciences for a period of one year.
The School of Agricultural Sciences, a constituent college of SGRRU, holds the distinction of being the first and only ICAR-accredited agricultural institution in Uttarakhand. The young agricultural scientists are set to revive the centuries-old orchard, primarily cultivating Litchi (Litchi chinensis) and Mango (Mangifera indica), using modern yet sustainable methods.
With a strong emphasis on organic farming, the initiative aims not only to restore the orchard but also to enhance fruit yield and quality using eco-friendly techniques and organic manure. This move aligns with the long-standing vision of Shri Darbar Sahib, which has consistently advocated for organic and sustainable farming practices.
The project is expected to serve as a live demonstration for students, researchers, and local farmers, encouraging the adoption of organic practices and contributing to the region’s agricultural advancement. The rejuvenation of Matawala Bagh not only symbolizes the fusion of heritage with scientific progress but also paves the way for a greener and more sustainable future for Uttarakhand’s agriculture.
